BUILDING AWARDS
& RECOGNITION
-Currently Viewing the Custom Build Award

On a beautiful September night at the Boca Raton Resort and Club Bill Hasey, President of Bloomfield Construction, gathered with South Florida’s best builders, designers, and architects to be honored at the annual Prism Award Ceremony. The awards, which are sponsored by the Sales and Marketing Counsel of the Gold Coast Builders Association, recognized outstanding design and achievements in residential construction in Palm Beach and north Broward Counties.

Hasey received the award for a custom residence in the Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club, which was a collaborative effort between Bloomfield Construction, Affiniti Architects, and Joyce Shore, interior designer. This collaboration is indicative of the kind of job that Hasey enjoys the most. “I love it when a homeowner has an idea of what he wants. We know that between the homeowner, the architect and designers, and our expert staff, that the end product will be ideal,” Hasey said. “When you can bring to life the vision that someone has in his head of his dream home, there is no better feeling,” he added.

Naturally, the homeowner was pleased to hear that their home had won the prestigious award. This project had been their dream from the beginning, and they had a great deal of input at all points of the home’s design and construction. “When working with clients, one thing that has to be determined immediately is the amount of participation they want to have in the project,” Hasey said. “In this case, we all worked together as a team,” he continued. Hasey remarked that sometimes a client wants very little input during the project, trusting the builder’s knowledge of design and construction. For Hasey, each relationship is different and requires excellent listening skills and attention to detail.

In this case, the homeowner wanted something unique to the Boca Raton area. He knew that Bill Hasey had made a name for himself for not only building the “Mizner style” architecture for which this area has become known, but also for building unique custom residences, from ultra-modern to traditional American. With an overall investment over $3,000,000, the homeowner was very careful about his decision with whom to build. He trusted that Hasey would be patient in the design details and knowledgeable about the proper way to build the residence. In the end, the West Indies style home was a beauty, the homeowner was overjoyed, and the Gold Coast Builders Association took notice.

The home itself views out of the Royal Palm golf course. Its graceful details are reminiscent of those found on homes in the West Indies, featuring substantial porches in both the front and rear of the home. An enormous amount of vegetation surrounds the home, making the homeowner feels as if they are alone in the islands. The roof is metal, which works well with this type of architecture, and the finishing details such as columns and shutters perfect the island theme.

Hasey was cognizant of each of these details as the home was being designed. Furthermore, he wanted to ensure that the details would not only look good, but also be of the highest quality for the homeowners. As a result, when building the roof, a material called Galvalume was used. This material is most highly recommended for metal roof structures, although it’s expensive. “Galvalume gives the traditional metal roof look. However, it is considerably stronger and has a much greater lifespan that other metal roofs,” Hasey said. In addition, a sprayed insulation called Icynene was used in the attic to seal off the home from extreme heat and humidity. “Icynene is sprayed directly onto the trusses so that heat is captured and not released into the rest of the home. Although it is a costly expense upfront, it can greatly reduce the overall energy bills and humidity in the home” Hasey said.

Adding to the island theme is a beach pool, which is designed to mimic the look of a lagoon. The pool is surrounded by tropical vegetation and uses natural stone as a backdrop for flowing waterfalls. In addition a sand-like substance is used at the shallow entrance to make it look as if you are entering the pool from a sandy beach. “This pool was the perfect accompaniment for the West Indies style architecture. It works with the hoe and its environment to complete the island look,” Hasey said.

“These clients enjoy life, and we wanted the home to reflect this,” Hasey said. The result of this is evident from the rear of the home. In addition to the beach pool, one side of the home boasts a summer kitchen which is fully equipped with a gas grill, sink, food preparation area, and refrigerator. The other side of the home, which sits directly outside of the library, is equipped with a bar with a refrigerator, icemaker, and sink. Televisions were strategically placed outside so that the clients could see them from any angle.

The home’s interior also reflects a blend of the client’s tastes with the builder’s know-how. The clients wanted very tall ceiling in certain areas of the home, which required the builder to install a sprinkler system much like that in a commercial building. In addition, the homeowner had custom stained glass panels designed for many areas in the home. The panels were built in by Bloomfield during construction. The result is a light, airy feeling, which is distinctive to this home.

“People who want to build in Royal Palm often come to be because I have twenty year history of building luxury homes and I am an expert on the community’s strict building guidelines. I know how to achieve the desired look for the homebuyer, while making it work from a design perspective,” Hasey said. This award winning house was no exception. Hasey notes that the due to the large amount of covered porch and the size of the home itself, he had to be very careful to balance the proportions properly. The result, however, is an inviting combination of casual elegance and grace, which stands out as being unique while blending into the natural environment.

“This is a trendsetting home,” Hasey notes. “There has been a buzz about it since its completion, and people have been consistently asking us about it. Everyone loves this house,” he added. Hasey looks forward to working with more clients to create the homes of their dreams.
